Why isn't my iPhone finding nearby homes for sale?

miniListings Support

The iPhone has good support for location-based services such as your miniListings app. However, there are times when the "Find Homes Nearby" functionality on your miniListings app may not be working properly. Sometimes this happens because the iPhone is having difficulty determining your location, and other times it could be related to your iPhone's settings. Either way, the fix is usually pretty simple and may involve just moving to a new location or adjusting your iPhone's settings.

If your iPhone should run into difficulty finding homes nearby, try these steps:

  1. Check the GPS button on your miniListings app
If the button is green, then your app is accessing your location, but the problem may be that it is using an old location or is unable to determine your current location. Since Safari uses a variety of methods to pinpoint your location, including GPS, cellphone towers, and Wi-fi networks, you will need to try one (or more) of the following to update your location:
    • If you are indoors, go outside (if feasible). GPS is a line-of-sight technology, so moving outside will give your phone an unobstructed view of the sky.
    • Try connecting to a Wi-fi network. To help determine location while indoors, iOS references a database of location-identified Wi-fi networks.
After trying one of these steps, reload your app. If it still isn't working, try to open an app, such as Google Maps, and see if the app can determine your location. Once it does, go back to the browser and reload your app. If your app still cannot find homes nearby, or if your GPS button is red/grey, then proceed to the next step.

  2. Check that your Location Services are enabled and that Safari can access your location
In order for websites to access your location, your Location Services need to be on, and Safari needs to be permitted to access your location. Here's how to check these settings.
    • Go to the iPhone home screen and select "Settings" (it's the icon with all the gears).

    • From the Settings menu, select "Location Services".

    • In the Location Services menu, make sure Location Services are "On", and that Safari is permitted to access your location.

Reload your miniListings app. If the GPS button is red/grey, proceed to the next step.

  3. Make sure Javascript is enabled in Safari
miniListings requires JavaScript to be enabled in Safari. Here's how to check Safari's JavaScript settings:
    • Go to the iPhone home screen and select "Settings" (see picture in step 2).
    • From the Settings menu, select "Safari".

Reload your miniListings app. If the GPS button is red/grey, proceed to the next step.

  4. Check to make sure that miniListings has access to your iPhone's location
When you first load your miniListings app, a pop-up will appear asking you to "Don't Allow" or "OK" access to the iPhone's location settings. If you accidentally (or intentionally) selected "Don't Allow", then your miniListings app will not be able to access your location. If you would like to allow your miniListings app to access your location, you will need to reset your iPhone's location settings.

Follow these steps to reset your iPhone's location settings:
    • Go to the home screen of the iPhone and select "Settings" (see picture in step 2).
    • From the Settings menu, select "General".

    • Open Safari and reload your miniListings application.
    • When you see the pop-up that says: "Safari Would Like to Use Your Current Location", be sure to press "OK". If you press "Don't Allow", then your miniListings app will not be able to use your location when performing searches.

Reload your miniListings app. If the GPS button is red/grey, then proceed to the next step.

  5. Try another website or app that uses location-based services
If none of the above steps resolves your location issue, try the following:
    • Try loading another website or app that uses location support, such as Google Maps
    • If the site cannot access your current location, it is possible that your carrier may have locked or restricted access to location-based services on your phone. You will need to contact your carrier to see if your location service can be "unlocked" (a fee may apply for this service)
    • If the site you loaded finds your location, reload your miniListings app (be sure to "Refresh the site"). If the app still cannot determine your location, please submit a support request that includes your iPhone version and the carrier so we can investigate the problem
